Waha prices expected to go negative (again)

As seasonal maintenance and new pipeline approvals roll in, natural gas producers should brace for change in coming months

byEnverus

CALGARY, Alberta (April 2, 2025) — Enverus Intelligence® Research (EIR), a subsidiary of Enverus, the most trusted energy-dedicated SaaS company that leverages Generative AI across its solutions, is releasing a report examining how recent pipeline project approvals have changed the picture for natural gas transportation as well as prices in the Permian Basin.

“Natural gas producers in the Permian Basin should once again brace for lower prices at Waha as production looks to outpace the pipeline capacity needed to transport gas to both domestic and international markets, including liquefied natural gas shipments,” said Jason Feit, lead author of a new report from EIR. “This is not the first time we’ve seen this, where prices collapse when seasonal pipeline maintenance work creates constrains on highly utilized takeaway capacity.”

“Given the forecasted shortage of gas takeaway capacity within the Permian Basin, the second-largest gas-producing region in the U.S. after the Marcellus shale in the Northeast, prices at the Waha hub for the 2025-26 winter season are expected to fall short of natural gas forward projections,” Feit said.

Key takeaways from the report:

  • Waha natural gas pricing expected to return to high levels of volatility until new pipeline capacity comes online in 2H26.
  • Newly announced gas pipeline projects will ultimately derisk Permian production out to 2030.
  • Pipeline ownership out of the Permian is diverse in aggregate but three companies own half of everything.
