Stella Energy Solutions is a leading utility-scale clean energy platform that builds the energy storage and solar infrastructure that is modernizing American electric power generation. Based in Texas, Stella develops, builds, owns and operates clean energy generation and storage facilities across the United States. Stella’s team has successfully developed more than 2GW and 4.4GWh of clean energy projects currently in operation, construction or contracted.

Challenges

Data Delays ERCOT Market & Topology Analysis

Founded in 2021, Stella is entering the competitive ERCOT market to provide its leading energy storage solutions. The independent power producer (IPP) must navigate complex development channels to get projects approved as quickly as possible.

To inform its development and leasing decisions, Stella needs reliable intelligence in the market to understand the competitive landscape and make decisions quickly to find land positions accounting for volatility and nodal pricing. However, multiple sources of public data for parcels and asset locations were time consuming to navigate and the reliability of the data was questionable. And while Stella’s development team could eventually curate the transmission data it needed, distribution data was not readily available, requiring time for staff to physically visit sites and send land letter campaigns to identify the most valuable nodes.

As a startup, Stella needed to build a process to site our projects, which are mainly storage but a little solar as well. We wanted to avoid the time and cost of working with third parties by adopting a lean data-driven platform to gain intelligence in the market, see what others are doing and make decisions quickly to find our energy project locations.

The IPP reports that PRISM’s data breadth and depth allows users to double click into the data to rapidly access insights vs. jumping in and out of disconnected systems.

Stella has rapidly expanded its business, now boasting a significantly larger portfolio of promising, actionable projects poised for market success. PRISM also assists Stella in capitalizing on the strong ancillary services market for energy storage while staying tuned into evolving grid topology and project opportunities.
