Africa Upstream: 2024 State of Play – Back to the Future? by Tom Richards

As we emerge from the fog of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is evident that the global energy landscape in 2024 differs significantly from just five years ago. The well-established energy trilemma has been met with the new-fangled trilemma of the pandemic, climate change and an energy crisis in Europe, prompting the oil and gas industry to engage in deep introspection. This has led to increased capital discipline, a focus on cash generation and, in some cases, a shift away from oil and gas.

However, the significance of hydrocarbons in the fast-growing, energy-starved Africa cannot be underestimated. Drawing on the expertise of the Enverus Global Scout team, we will showcase some of the recent upstream hotspots and trends across the continent, which has seen a resurgence in activity post-pandemic. We’ll also give some ‘scouty senses” and predictions as to what to look out for into 2025 and beyond.
